General questions about CarPlay & Android Auto retrofits

What CarPlay and Android Auto are, which cars can be upgraded and who is behind Auto Upgrade.

What are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – and what's the difference?

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto bring the key features of your phone to your car's screen: navigation, calls, music, podcasts and messages, which are read out to you and can be answered by voice. Large icons and voice control help you keep your attention on the road.

The difference lies in the phone: CarPlay is made for the iPhone, Android Auto for Android phones. You don't have to choose – all our packages support both and recognise your phone automatically. Find out more about retrofitting CarPlay and retrofitting Android Auto.

Which cars can you fit with CarPlay and Android Auto?

Typically cars from around 2000 to 2018 that didn't come with CarPlay from the factory. That might be a car with a single-DIN radio (the slim, classic radio slot) or a double-DIN radio (twice as tall), but also one with a factory screen, such as a BMW, Audi or Mercedes-Benz. We also upgrade vans and campervans, and we look at youngtimers (modern classics) case by case.

We'll tell you whether and how it works for your car after a free check. You'll find an overview by make under Vehicles and more for camper owners under campervans & vans.

Is it really worth upgrading an older car?

In many cases, yes. A well-kept car that's ten or fifteen years old often has plenty of reliable years ahead of it – it just lacks modern technology. Instead of buying a new car to get CarPlay, you keep the car you know and invest only a fraction of that: from CHF 690, installation included.

That's good for your budget and for the environment, because keeping your car for longer saves the resources needed to build a new one. If major repairs are due anyway, factor them into your decision – we're happy to give you honest advice.

New display or original look – what's the difference?

With the Essential, Comfort and Premium packages, we replace the old radio with a new touch display – 9 to 12.3 inches, depending on the package and car – and a matching fascia. You get a completely new system with CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth and, depending on the package, DAB+.

If your car already has a factory screen, for example a BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche or Volvo, the original-look interface (from CHF 790) is often the more elegant solution: the dashboard stays as it is, and wireless CarPlay and Android Auto appear on the original screen. You operate it by touch, if your screen supports it, or with the original controller (iDrive, MMI, Comand). Overview: prices & packages.

What navigation will I have after the upgrade?

You navigate with the apps you already know from your phone: Google Maps, Waze or Apple Maps – with up-to-date maps, live traffic information and alternative routes around congestion. The maps are updated continuously, with no extra cost for map updates, whereas updates for many old factory sat navs are expensive or no longer available at all.

With the Comfort and Premium packages, we also set up offline maps on the display, so you can find your way in dead zones or abroad without data roaming. More: navigation retrofit.

Will it look as if it came from the factory?

That's what we aim for. Every display is fitted with a vehicle-specific fascia shaped to fit your dashboard – no gaps and no visible cables. The wiring is plug & play, using matching connectors, so none of the original wiring is cut.

With the original-look interface, you won't see any difference from the outside at all, because the factory screen stays. Depending on the car, larger displays may sit slightly proud of the dashboard – we're happy to discuss beforehand how this will look in your model. You'll find installation examples under Examples.

Who is behind Auto Upgrade?

Auto Upgrade is a young company from German-speaking Switzerland. We focus on one thing: bringing modern technology such as CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, DAB+ and cameras into older cars – neatly installed, with honest advice and at a fixed price. Thanks to our pickup and delivery service, you don't even need to drive to the workshop.

We're independent and not tied to any car maker, so we can choose the solution that's technically right for each car. Find out more on our About us page.

Which areas do you cover?

We serve Zurich, Zug and the surrounding area. In Zurich and Zug, pickup and return are included in the package price. Elsewhere within 60 km of Zurich – for example Winterthur, Baden, Rapperswil, Lucerne or Schaffhausen – we're happy to collect your car too, for a surcharge from CHF 49, shown clearly in your quote.

Alternatively, you can bring your car to us yourself. Just include your postcode or town in your request, and your quote will show straight away whether a surcharge applies.

Technology questions: what works and how

Which phone you need, what keeps working after installation and how the system behaves in everyday use.

Does CarPlay work wirelessly or do I need a cable?

Both work. Our display packages support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wirelessly and with a cable; the original-look interface connects wirelessly. Wireless is particularly convenient: get in, drive off – your phone connects automatically and can stay in your pocket or bag.

With a cable, your phone charges at the same time and the connection is very stable. As wireless CarPlay uses more of your phone's battery, a wireless charging pad (from CHF 129) or a USB-C fast-charging socket (CHF 79) is worth considering for longer journeys.

Which phone do I need?

For Apple CarPlay you need an iPhone – practically every iPhone from recent years works, ideally with the latest iOS. For Android Auto you need an Android phone running a current version of Android; on newer phones Android Auto is built in, otherwise you can download the app for free.

If you have a very old or unusual model, we're happy to check beforehand. Just tell us in your request which phones you and anyone else who drives the car use.

Will my steering-wheel controls still work?

In most cases, yes – as long as your car has steering-wheel buttons for audio and phone. We fit a CAN-bus adapter for this. The CAN bus is your car's internal data network, and the adapter ‘translates’ its signals for the new unit. That way you can adjust the volume, skip tracks, take calls and, depending on the car, start voice control just as before.

We check which buttons are supported on your model when preparing your quote and note it there.

Will my parking sensors and factory reversing camera keep working?

In most cases, yes – depending on your car's equipment. The parking sensor beeps keep working, and on many Volkswagen Group models (VW, Audi, Skoda, SEAT) the new display also shows the visual parking display, i.e. the graphic showing the distance to obstacles.

A factory reversing camera can usually be kept. Depending on the car, this needs an adapter or some extra work, which will be listed in your quote. No camera yet? We'll happily fit one: reversing camera retrofit.

My car has a Bose, Harman Kardon or similar sound system – is that a problem?

In most cases, no. Sound systems with a separate amplifier – such as Bose, Harman Kardon, Dynaudio, Fender or Bang & Olufsen – need a special adapter so that the amplifier is still controlled properly and you keep the sound you're used to.

Some cars also send audio over the MOST bus, a data network that uses fibre-optic cables instead of copper wires. There are suitable solutions for this too. We always state any extra cost upfront in your written quote, never as a surprise. Just tell us which sound system your car has – the logo is often on the speaker covers.

How well do calls and voice control work?

For calls and voice commands we fit an external microphone, for example in the headlining near the rear-view mirror, where it picks up your voice well. In some cars the original microphone can be used instead.

Depending on the car, you start Siri or Google Assistant with the voice button on the steering wheel, with a tap on the screen or simply by saying ‘Siri’ or ‘Hey Google’. That lets you dictate messages, enter destinations or choose music without taking your hands off the wheel. The person you're calling hears you through the microphone, and you hear them through the car's speakers.

Can two phones be connected at the same time?

The system remembers several phones, for example yours and those of your family. CarPlay or Android Auto runs with one phone at a time, and you simply choose which one on the display. Depending on the unit, a second phone can stay connected via Bluetooth for calls at the same time.

If you take turns driving the car, there's nothing to set up again: the system automatically connects to a phone it knows. At handover, we're happy to pair every phone that regularly travels in the car.

Can I install apps from the Play Store on the display?

Yes, that's one of the advantages of our displays: they run on Android, and depending on the unit you can install apps from the Google Play Store directly on them, such as music, radio or navigation apps. Apps on the display need an internet connection, for example via your phone's hotspot.

That's not the same as Android Auto, where the apps run on your phone and are simply shown on the display – just like CarPlay. Video apps such as YouTube are only meant for when you're parked, for example while waiting or at the campsite, never while driving.

Does the display need internet or a SIM card – and does navigation work offline?

For CarPlay and Android Auto, the display needs neither a SIM card nor its own internet connection: navigation, streaming and traffic information use your phone's mobile data. Only if you want to use apps directly on the Android display do you connect it to your phone's hotspot.

You'll reach your destination without a signal too: Google Maps and Apple Maps can save map areas offline on your phone. With the Comfort and Premium packages, we also set up offline maps directly on the display – handy in dead zones, on mountain passes or on holiday abroad.

Are there software updates?

Yes, on two levels. CarPlay and Android Auto are updated through your phone, so new features from Apple and Google arrive automatically with your phone's updates. Apps on the Android display update via the Play Store whenever the display is connected to the internet.

For the display's own system software, the device manufacturers provide updates depending on the model. We check the software version during set-up, and if an update makes sense later on, we'll help you via WhatsApp or phone.

How quickly does the system start – and will it drain my car battery?

The display starts with the ignition and is ready after a short moment; the wireless connection to your phone follows automatically. The Comfort and Premium packages start noticeably faster and run more smoothly thanks to 8 GB of RAM.

Your car battery won't be drained unnecessarily: we wire the unit so that it switches on and off with the ignition. When it's off, its power consumption is comparable to that of a normal car radio. If we notice during installation that your battery is getting weak, we'll let you know.

Is the display easy to read in sunlight – and can it cope with cold and heat?

You can adjust the brightness, and depending on the car the display dims automatically at night with the lights. The high-resolution QLED display in the Comfort and Premium packages offers strong colours and good contrast. When the sun is low, reflections can occur – as with any screen.

The units are built for use in cars and handle normal interior temperatures, from a frosty winter morning to a hot summer's day. In severe cold, start-up may take a moment longer. A windscreen sunshade protects the whole cockpit in summer, and our 2-year warranty applies.

How good is DAB+ reception?

DAB+ with an antenna is included in the Comfort and Premium packages; with Essential you can add it for CHF 149. We route the antenna neatly and as discreetly as possible, because a well-placed antenna is key to stable reception.

Switzerland's DAB+ network is well developed, on the main routes as well as in many regions away from them. In remote valleys, reception can be weaker in places, as with any radio signal – then simply carry on with music or podcasts from your phone. More: DAB+ retrofit.

How it works: from request to handover

How you get your upgrade – without having to drive to the workshop yourself.

How do I request a quote – and what information do you need?

The easiest way is our quote form, WhatsApp or a phone call. This information helps us:

  • make, model and year (see your Fahrzeugausweis, the vehicle registration document)
  • a photo of the dashboard showing the radio or screen
  • if known: factory sound system (e.g. Bose), camera or parking sensors
  • what you'd like, e.g. a package, DAB+ or a reversing camera

Don't worry if you don't know everything – we'll ask. How we handle your details is explained in our privacy policy.

How quickly will I get a quote – and when can you fit it?

After your request, we check free of charge which solution suits your car and send you a written fixed-price quote within 24 hours (working days). If you're happy with it, we arrange an appointment, usually within one to two weeks.

We need that time because we order the parts specifically for your car, such as the fascia and adapters. With the Premium package you get priority scheduling. You'll find the whole process step by step under How it works.

How does the pickup work?

We collect your car wherever suits you – at home or at work – at the agreed time. Ideally you hand us the key in person; if that's not possible, we'll find a secure solution together.

We then drive your car straight to the workshop, install the system, test every function and bring it back, usually the same day. So there's no need to take time off work or arrange a lift.

Can I bring my car to you myself?

Yes, of course. If you'd rather come yourself, we simply arrange a time for the handover at the workshop. This can be worthwhile if you live outside Zurich and Zug, as there's then no pickup surcharge.

You'll receive the location and time with your appointment confirmation. Even if you bring the car yourself, the personal introduction of around 15 minutes is included: we pair your phone and show you all the functions.

Do you also collect motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes or very tall vehicles?

We're happy to upgrade motorhomes, campervans and vans too. However, vehicles with a gross weight over 3.5 tonnes require a different driving licence (category C1 or C), and very tall vehicles don't fit into every workshop. In these cases we arrange the handover individually – for example, you bring the vehicle yourself, or we find another solution together.

Just mention the weight and height in your request. More for camper owners: campervans & vans.

How long does installation take?

The installation itself usually takes two to four hours. More complex cars, for example with a factory sound system, a MOST bus or an additional camera, can take up to a day. On top of that come a thorough function test and the drive there and back.

As a rule, you'll get your car back the same day. We'll tell you how long your car is likely to take when we arrange the appointment, so you can plan ahead.

What do I need to prepare before pickup?

Not much. It helps if you:

  • remove valuables and personal belongings from the car
  • leave the Fahrzeugausweis (vehicle registration document) in the car, as it has to be carried on every journey
  • have the code for your original radio to hand, if you have it (often in the service book or on a separate code card) – so the radio can easily be refitted later
  • update your phone to the latest software

We'll take care of the rest.

What happens at handover – and do I get my original radio back?

Before we bring your car back, we test every function thoroughly. At handover we take around 15 minutes: we pair your phone, show you CarPlay or Android Auto, navigation, radio and the most important settings, and answer your questions.

You'll of course get your original radio back. Keep it somewhere safe: it lets you restore the original setup at any time, for example before selling the car or returning a leased one.

What if something doesn't work after installation?

Just get in touch via WhatsApp or phone. Many questions, for example about settings or connecting your phone, can be sorted out straight away – often with a short explanation or a screenshot.

If there's a fault with the device or the installation, it's covered by our 2-year warranty on device and installation, and we'll put it right. So you're not left on your own with your new technology after handover.

Prices, payment & warranty

What's included, what affects the price, how you pay and what the warranty covers.

What's included in the price?

Our package prices are all-inclusive. They cover:

  • the unit with a vehicle-specific fascia
  • the right cables and adapters (plug & play, with a CAN-bus adapter for the steering-wheel controls where needed)
  • installation at the workshop including a function test
  • pickup and return in Zurich and Zug
  • set-up and a personal introduction
  • 2 years' warranty on device and installation

If your car is further away, a surcharge from CHF 49 applies. Like every other item, it's shown clearly in your quote.

What's the difference between the Essential, Comfort, Premium and Original look packages?
  • Essential (from CHF 690): 9- or 10-inch display, wireless and wired CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth hands-free, navigation and FM radio.
  • Comfort (from CHF 890): adds more performance (8 GB/128 GB), a high-resolution QLED display, DAB+ with antenna, DSP sound settings and offline maps.
  • Premium (from CHF 1,190): adds the largest display that fits (up to 12.3 inches), an HD reversing camera with guide lines including installation, and priority scheduling.
  • Original look (from CHF 790): an interface for the factory screen – the dashboard stays unchanged.

You can add a reversing camera (CHF 249) or, with Essential, DAB+ (CHF 149). Full details: prices & packages.

What can make it more expensive?

For many cars, the package price applies. Extra work is mainly needed for:

  • factory sound systems with an amplifier, such as Bose, Harman Kardon, Dynaudio, Fender or Bang & Olufsen
  • cars with a MOST bus, i.e. data transmitted over fibre-optic cables
  • rare models that need a special fascia
  • integrating a factory reversing camera

Importantly, these costs are always included in your written quote. So you know exactly what you'll pay before the appointment – no surprises.

Is the quote free and binding?

Checking your car and preparing the quote are free of charge and place you under no obligation. For us, however, the quote is a fixed price: you receive a written final price, and that's exactly what you pay – provided the car matches your details and photos.

If we do come across something unexpected during installation, we'll talk to you first. Nothing extra is charged without your agreement. Request your free quote here.

How can I pay?

You only pay when you get your car back with the system fully installed – conveniently by TWINT (the Swiss mobile payment app), bank transfer or cash. As a rule, no advance payment is needed.

Only for special orders, such as rare fascias or special units, may a deposit be required. Whether one applies, and how much, is stated in your quote – so you know where you stand from the start.

What warranty do I get – and what happens if something is faulty?

You get 2 years' warranty on the device and the installation. If something isn't working as it should, contact us via WhatsApp or phone. First we check whether it's just a setting – that can often be fixed straight away.

If the device is faulty or there's an installation error, we put it right under the warranty, by repairing or replacing the unit, depending on the case. Because the parts and the installation come from one source, you have a single point of contact for everything.

Can I just buy the unit and fit it myself?

No – we deliberately offer only complete solutions including installation. The reason: whether CarPlay, steering-wheel controls, camera and sound system work reliably depends heavily on the right accessories and a clean installation.

Only when we're responsible for both can we stand behind the result and give you 2 years' warranty on device and installation. In return, you get a tested system including set-up, introduction and support – without having to wrestle with connectors and adapters yourself.

Do you offer gift vouchers?

Yes, we're happy to issue a voucher on request – a lovely idea for parents, friends or anyone whose car still has no CarPlay. Just get in touch via WhatsApp, phone or our request form, and we'll discuss the details.

Tip: if you know the make, model and year of the recipient's car, we can check in advance which solution fits. That way, the only surprise will be the upgrade itself.

How much does it cost to have the original radio refitted later?

Because we install everything plug & play and never cut the original wiring, the original setup can be restored at any time. We refit the original radio for CHF 149.

This makes sense, for example, if you'd like to sell your car in its original condition or are returning a leased car. Just keep your original radio and, if you have it, the radio code in a safe place. We'll gladly remind you of this at handover.

Can't see your question?

Just ask us – on WhatsApp, by phone or with the quote form. You'll receive a free fixed-price quote for your car within 24 hours (working days).
