What is Apple CarPlay – and what changes day to day?

Apple CarPlay puts the key features of your iPhone on the screen in your dashboard, redesigned for driving: big icons, simple menus, and control by touch, steering-wheel buttons or voice. The apps run on your iPhone, so your contacts, playlists and saved places are there straight away – nothing to set up twice.

What it feels like on the road

  • You get in, start the engine and CarPlay connects by itself – with wireless CarPlay, your iPhone stays in your pocket.
  • Navigation runs large and easy to read in the dashboard instead of on a small phone in a holder.
  • Siri handles calls and messages, so your eyes stay on the road.

It's more comfortable, safer and keeps you on the right side of the law: in Switzerland, using a phone without hands-free while driving means a fixed fine of 100 francs.

What you can use with CarPlay in your car

CarPlay only shows apps that suit driving – with large buttons and voice control.

Navigation

Apple Maps, Google Maps or Waze with current maps and live traffic. More: navigation retrofit.

Music

Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music or radio apps – your playlists are ready to go.

Podcasts & audiobooks

Apple Podcasts, Audible or Apple Books pick up exactly where you left off.

Phone calls

Contacts, favourites and recent calls on screen; an external microphone keeps conversations clear.

Messages

Siri reads out texts and iMessages and you reply by dictation – no glancing at your phone.

WhatsApp

Have messages read aloud, reply by voice and take WhatsApp calls through the car speakers.

Siri

‘Take me home’ or ‘Call Mum’ – your hands stay on the wheel.

Calendar

Today's appointments at a glance, with directions to any address.

Wireless CarPlay retrofit – or stick with a cable?

You don't have to choose: our display packages support both wireless CarPlay and CarPlay via USB cable, and the original-look interface connects wirelessly.

Wireless

Once paired, your iPhone connects automatically via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi when you get in. Ideal for the commute, the school run and quick errands – your phone stays in your bag or jacket. Wireless uses more battery, so a wireless charging pad (from CHF 129) is a handy addition.

With a cable

Just plug in: your iPhone charges as you drive and the connection is especially stable – ideal for long journeys. We can also fit a USB-C fast-charging socket (CHF 79).

Which iPhones work with CarPlay?

Practically every iPhone from recent years supports CarPlay, both wireless and wired. What matters is an up-to-date version of iOS: new CarPlay features usually arrive with iOS updates, so the display in your car doesn't need replacing. Got an older model? We'll check it beforehand.

Someone in the family uses Android? No problem: every package also supports Android Auto. Several phones can be paired, and one connects at a time.

What keeps working in your car

We install everything plug & play: the original wiring isn't cut but connected with vehicle-specific adapters. Depending on the car and its equipment, you keep:

  • Steering-wheel buttons for volume, tracks and phone – via a CAN-bus adapter that translates signals from the car's internal data network
  • Parking sensor beeps – and on many VW, Audi, Skoda and Seat models the visual parking display, too
  • A factory-fitted reversing camera – or, if there isn't one, we can retrofit a reversing camera
  • Factory sound systems with an amplifier, e.g. from Bose, Harman Kardon or Dynaudio, with the right adapter
  • On some models, the original microphone and the trip-computer or climate-control displays
  • Your original radio: we hand it back, and it can be refitted at any time

CarPlay retrofit: frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to add Apple CarPlay to my car?

With a new touchscreen from CHF 690; with an interface for the original screen from CHF 790 – each including fitting, set-up, an introduction and pickup in Zurich and Zug. Any extra work, for example for factory sound systems with an amplifier or rare vehicles, is already in your fixed-price quote, never a surprise afterwards. Full details on our prices page.

Can CarPlay be added to any car?

In most cases, yes – typically cars built between around 2000 and 2018 with a 1-DIN or 2-DIN radio or a factory screen. We check your car for free based on make, model, year and a photo. See our vehicle pages, for example VW or BMW.

Is wireless CarPlay included in every package?

Yes. All display packages and the original-look interface support wireless CarPlay. With the displays, you can also connect by cable – handy when you want your iPhone to charge on long journeys.

Do I need an MFK inspection or a change to my registration document?

As a rule, no. Replacing the radio isn't a modification that requires an MFK (the Swiss vehicle inspection) or an entry in the vehicle registration document (Fahrzeugausweis). More answers in our FAQ.

How long does the fitting take?

Typically 2–4 hours; complex systems can take up to a day. With our pickup and delivery service, you'll usually have your car back the same day.

Can the original radio be refitted later?

Yes. Everything is plug & play and you keep your original radio. Before you sell the car or return a leased car, we can refit it for you (CHF 149). For leased cars, check your contract first.
