Will it fit my car?

Plenty of BMWs built between 2003 and 2018 still drive beautifully – it's the infotainment that has aged: outdated sat nav maps, Bluetooth that only handles calls, no Spotify. A CarPlay retrofit for your BMW (or Android Auto) puts Google Maps, Waze or Apple Maps with live traffic, your music and voice-dictated messages on the screen in your dashboard.

Depending on the model, there are two routes. A new widescreen Android display replaces the iDrive screen or the radio (from CHF 690), or an interface adds CarPlay to the original screen so the cockpit looks exactly as before (from CHF 790). On cars with NBT EVO, we first check whether CarPlay can be activated in the factory system.

We collect your BMW from home or work – included in Zurich and Zug – and usually return it the same day. You'll receive a written fixed-price quote within 24 hours (working days). See all packages on our prices page, or go straight to the quote form for your BMW.

Factory radios and systems in BMW cars

BMW has fitted several generations of radio and iDrive systems over the years. Which solution suits your car depends mainly on the system it has – in most cases we can tell from a photo of the screen and centre console.

Business and Professional radio

Typical of older 1 Series, 3 Series, X1 and X3 models without navigation. A new Android display with a vehicle-specific fascia takes over radio, navigation and CarPlay.

CCC and CIC (approx. 2003–2013)

The iDrive navigation of the E-series and early F-series models. Options are a widescreen display in place of the original screen – the iDrive controller keeps working in many cases – or an interface that brings CarPlay and Android Auto to the existing screen.

NBT (approx. 2012–2016)

A large, sharp screen, but no CarPlay from the factory. Here an original-look interface is usually the most discreet option.

NBT EVO (from approx. 2016)

Depending on the software version, CarPlay can be activated in the factory system. We clarify this before quoting; if it isn't possible, an interface is the way to go.

What keeps working in your BMW

  • iDrive controller – as a rule with an interface, in many cases with a new display
  • Steering-wheel buttons for volume, tracks and phone
  • Factory reversing camera and PDC parking beeps (depending on equipment)
  • Harman Kardon, HiFi or Logic7 sound system with the right adapter
  • Original menus such as vehicle settings – usually one button press away

BMW questions

Will my iDrive controller still work?

In most cases, yes. With an original-look interface you usually control CarPlay and Android Auto directly with the iDrive controller. The new Android displays are touchscreens, and on many models the controller works as well – for scrolling and confirming, for example. We'll clarify how it works on your BMW before we send the quote.

Can CarPlay simply be activated on my BMW?

Only on certain cars. If your BMW has the NBT EVO system (on many models from around 2016), CarPlay can be activated in the factory system depending on the software version. Older systems – CCC, CIC and NBT – don't support CarPlay, so an interface or a new display is the answer there. Send us a photo of the screen and we'll check free of charge.

Which system does my BMW have – CCC, CIC or NBT?

As a rough guide: CCC appears in cars with navigation up to around 2008, CIC from about 2008 to 2013, NBT from around 2012/2013 and NBT EVO from around 2016. The exact changeover varies by model series. The easiest way is to attach a photo of the screen and iDrive controller to your enquiry – we'll identify the system for you.

Can my BMW be returned to its original state later?

Yes. We use plug-and-play wiring harnesses and never cut the original wiring. You get the original unit back when we return the car. Before you sell the car or hand back a leased one, we can refit it on request for CHF 149. As a rule, replacing the radio doesn't require an entry in the vehicle registration document (Fahrzeugausweis).
