An Audi A4, A6 or Q5 from 2004 to 2016 often still drives like the day it was delivered – it's the infotainment that has aged: maps on DVD or hard disk, fiddly Bluetooth pairing, no Apple CarPlay and no Android Auto. When you retrofit CarPlay to your Audi, you navigate with Google Maps, Waze or Apple Maps, listen to Spotify and make calls by voice.

Depending on the model, there are two routes. Cars with a double-DIN radio such as the Concert, Symphony or RNS-E get a new Android touchscreen in place of the factory unit. For cars with an MMI screen we usually recommend the original look: an interface brings CarPlay and Android Auto straight to your MMI display, operated with the original rotary controller. The cockpit looks exactly as it left the factory.

We collect your Audi from home or work and usually bring it back the same day. New displays start from CHF 690, the original look from CHF 790 – see prices for details. You receive the fixed price for your car in writing: request a quote for your Audi.

Factory radios and systems in Audi cars

Chorus, Concert, Symphony and RNS-E

The A3 8P, A4 B7 and TT 8J have a double-DIN radio – a unit in a slot twice the standard height. Here a 9" or 10" Android display with a matching fascia replaces the factory radio. In the A4 B8, A5 and Q5, the Concert and Symphony radios have their own screen at the top of the dashboard – depending on the car, a new display or an interface is possible. The same applies to the A1 8X with its pop-up screen.

MMI 2G, 3G and 3G+

In the A4 B8, A5, Q5, A6 and Q7 with MMI Navigation plus, the original-look interface keeps your screen in place. With MMI 3G and 3G+ this works well in most cases. For MMI 2G the choice of interfaces is smaller, so we check individually whether an interface or a new display makes more sense.

MIB (A3 8V, facelifted A6 C7)

On newer systems based on MIB2, Audi smartphone interface is sometimes already fitted or can be activated, depending on the equipment – often the most affordable option. We clarify this beforehand from a photo.

What keeps working in your Audi

  • With the original look: MMI screen, rotary controller and all vehicle menus
  • Steering-wheel buttons for volume, tracks and calls – depending on model and solution
  • Parking sensor beeps (Audi parking system) – and on many models the visual display too
  • Factory reversing camera – some cars need an extra adapter
  • Bose or Bang & Olufsen sound system (depending on model) with the right adapter

Audi questions

Will my MMI screen stay?

Yes. With the original-look interface, your MMI screen stays exactly where it is. CarPlay and Android Auto appear on it and are operated with the rotary controller or by voice. A press of a button switches between MMI and CarPlay; the radio, vehicle settings and parking display work as before as a rule. The interface starts from CHF 790 – the exact price depends on the MMI version and sound system.

My Audi has Bose or Bang & Olufsen – is that a problem?

In most cases, no. With the original-look interface, sound still plays through your factory system, so the audio quality is retained. If we replace the radio with a new display, some cars need a special adapter – fibre-optic systems (MOST bus) take a little more work. We tell you about any extra cost up front in your fixed-price quote, never as a surprise on the invoice.

Which solution suits my A4 B8, A5 or Q5?

It depends on the system fitted. With MMI Navigation plus (3G or 3G+), we usually recommend the original look: the screen stays and CarPlay is added. With a Concert or Symphony radio, either an interface or a new Android display is possible – the display also gives you a bigger screen. For early cars with MMI 2G (until around 2009), we check individually. A photo of the dashboard is all we need for a clear recommendation.

Can my A3 8V or A6 C7 get CarPlay by activation?

Sometimes, yes. On the facelifted models with MIB2 infotainment, Audi smartphone interface may already be fitted or can be activated retrospectively, depending on the equipment – occasionally with a different USB socket. Older cars with MIB1 or MMI 3G+ cannot be activated; there, an interface brings CarPlay to the original screen. Send us a photo of the screen and the year of your car, and we'll tell you which route costs less.
