Will it fit my car?

Plenty of Volkswagens built between 2003 and 2016 are still in excellent shape – it's only the radio that shows its age: no Apple CarPlay, no Android Auto, outdated maps and Bluetooth that works when it feels like it. Rather than replacing the car, it makes sense to retrofit CarPlay to your VW. Your Golf, Passat, Tiguan or T5 gains live navigation with Google Maps, Waze or Apple Maps, music streaming and safe hands-free calling.

Cars with an RCD or RNS radio get a new Android touchscreen with a made-to-measure fascia in place of the factory unit – the steering-wheel buttons and parking beeps keep working in most cases. On newer models with MIB infotainment, we first check whether App-Connect (VW's name for its CarPlay and Android Auto connection) can be activated, or whether a new display is the better choice.

We collect your VW from home or work and usually bring it back the same day. Packages start from CHF 690 – see prices and packages for the details. You receive a binding fixed price for your car in writing: request a quote for your VW.

Factory radios and systems in VW cars

RCD and RNS radios (approx. 2003–2015)

The Golf 5 and 6, Passat B6 and B7, Tiguan, Touran, Caddy, the Sharan up to 2015 and the T5 usually have a double-DIN radio – a unit in a slot twice the standard height – such as the RCD 310, RCD 510, RNS 310, RNS 315 or RNS 510, or an RCD 300, RCD 500 or MFD 2 in older cars. Here a 9" or 10" Android display replaces the factory radio, with a vehicle-specific fascia and a plug-and-play harness, without cutting the original wiring.

MIB infotainment (from approx. 2012)

The Golf 7, Polo 6C, T6 and facelifted Sharan use VW's MIB platform (Composition Touch, Colour or Media, Discover Media or Pro). First-generation MIB1 units, fitted until around mid-2015, cannot run CarPlay, so a new display is the usual answer. With MIB2 (model year 2016 onwards), App-Connect is sometimes already on board or can be activated depending on the unit and equipment, occasionally together with a different USB socket. That is often cheaper than a new display.

Not sure what's fitted in your VW? A photo of the radio is all we need to recommend the right solution. We're also happy to check the Scirocco, Eos, Beetle, CC or Amarok.

What keeps working in your VW

  • Steering-wheel buttons for volume, tracks and calls – via a CAN-bus adapter that translates the signals from the car's electronics
  • Parking sensor beeps – and on many models the visual parking display (OPS) on the new screen
  • Factory reversing camera such as Rear Assist – some cars need an extra adapter
  • Factory sound system with amplifier, e.g. Dynaudio, with the right adapter
  • Climate and trip-computer information on the display in some models (via CAN bus)

VW questions

My Golf 7 already has a touchscreen – can it still get CarPlay?

In most cases, yes. It comes down to the unit generation: a Golf 7 built until around mid-2015 usually has MIB1, where a new display adds CarPlay and Android Auto. With MIB2, App-Connect is sometimes already there or can be activated depending on the equipment, occasionally with a different USB socket. Send us a photo of the screen and the year of your car – we'll recommend the most affordable solution that makes sense for your Golf.

Will the visual parking display (OPS) still work?

The parking sensor beeps keep working as a rule. On many VWs, the visual display (OPS) with its coloured segments around the car can also appear on the new screen via the CAN-bus adapter. Whether this works in your car depends on the model, year and equipment. We check it beforehand and state it in your quote, so you know exactly what you'll get.

Is an upgrade worth it in a T5 or T6?

Especially in a van, a large display with CarPlay or Android Auto makes life easier: navigation with live traffic, music streaming and hands-free calls on every trip. In a T5 we replace the RCD or RNS radio with a new display; in a T6 we first check, depending on the radio, whether App-Connect can be activated. A reversing camera can be fitted at the same time, and for high-roof vans we arrange the handover individually. More on our campervans & vans page.

How much does CarPlay cost in a Golf 6?

For a Golf 6 with an RCD or RNS radio, the Essential package from CHF 690 is usually the right fit – including display, fascia, CAN-bus adapter, installation, introduction and pickup in Zurich and Zug. If you'd like DAB+ and faster hardware, choose Comfort from CHF 890. A factory sound system with amplifier or a factory camera may need an extra adapter – this is shown transparently in your fixed-price quote.
