Android Auto retrofit: how your phone gets onto the dashboard

Android Auto puts a simplified, driving-friendly version of your Android phone on the car's screen. You get large tiles instead of small icons, and the map stays in view while music plays. You control it by touch, steering-wheel buttons or voice.

The apps run on your phone. Since Android 10, Android Auto is built into the system, so there's usually nothing to install. New features arrive with phone updates – the interface in your car stays current without new hardware.

And because your phone stays in your pocket, you're on the safe side legally, too: in Switzerland, using a phone without hands-free while driving carries a fixed fine of 100 francs.

Your apps with Android Auto

Google Maps & Waze

Live traffic, congestion alerts and lane guidance – large and easy to read. More: navigation retrofit.

Google Assistant

‘Hey Google, navigate to work’ – destinations, calls and music by voice. On some phones, Gemini has already taken over.

Spotify & YouTube Music

Playlists, podcasts and audiobooks, e.g. from Audible, play straight through the car speakers.

WhatsApp & texts

New messages are read aloud and you reply by voice. WhatsApp calls work too.

Phone calls

Contacts and favourites on screen, calls by tap or voice – with an external microphone for clear sound.

Everything at a glance

Map, music and calls at once: the split view shows several apps side by side, depending on the screen format.

Android Auto or an Android car radio – what's the difference?

The two are often confused – but they're different things.

Android Auto: your phone in the car

Android Auto is a feature of your phone: the phone does the work, and the car's screen shows the interface and takes your input. No phone, no Android Auto.

Android car radio: a tablet in the dashboard

An Android car radio (often called an Android head unit) has its own Android system. It runs apps from the Google Play Store even without a phone – a navigation app with offline maps, say, or a streaming service. Online apps need internet, for example via your phone's hotspot. Videos, of course, only when parked.

With us, you get both

Every Android head unit we fit has Android Auto and Apple CarPlay built in. Day to day you'll mostly use Android Auto; the Android system is the bonus for offline maps and special apps.

Wireless Android Auto or a cable?

The display packages give you both, so you can switch any time; the original-look interface connects wirelessly.

Tip: wireless uses more battery. We can fit a wireless charging pad (from CHF 129) or a USB-C fast-charging socket (CHF 79) at the same time.

Which Android phones work?

Android Auto runs on phones with a current Android version – from Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel to Xiaomi, OnePlus, Motorola or Oppo. Most modern smartphones support wireless Android Auto; very old or very basic models may have limitations, in which case you simply connect by cable.

Newer Huawei phones without Google services generally don't support Android Auto. Bluetooth calls and music, however, work with practically any phone – and iPhone users get Apple CarPlay, included in every package. Tell us your phone model and we'll check it too.

Your car stays your car: what keeps working

We connect everything with vehicle-specific adapters, without cutting the original wiring. Depending on the model and equipment, you keep:

  • Steering-wheel buttons – thanks to a CAN-bus adapter that translates signals from the car's data network
  • Parking sensor warning tones, and on many VW group cars the graphic parking display
  • An existing factory reversing camera
  • The factory sound system with amplifier (e.g. Bose, Harman Kardon or Fender) – with the right adapter
  • On some models, the original microphone and trip-computer or climate displays

Android Auto retrofit: frequently asked questions

How much does an Android Auto retrofit cost?

From CHF 690 with a new touchscreen, or from CHF 790 with an interface for the original screen – including fitting, set-up, an introduction and pickup in Zurich and Zug. Any extra costs, for example for factory sound systems with an amplifier, are already in your fixed-price quote. Overview: prices.

What's the difference between Android Auto and an Android car radio?

Android Auto mirrors your phone's car interface – no phone, no display. An Android car radio runs its own Android apps. Our displays do both.

Will wireless Android Auto work with my phone?

With most current Android phones, yes – we check your model along with your car. If wireless doesn't work, you can use Android Auto with a cable.

Does Android Auto cost anything, and does it need mobile data?

Android Auto itself is free. Navigation with live traffic and music streaming use your phone's mobile data. To save data, download music and maps in advance; from the Comfort package, we also set up offline maps on the display.

Will I lose my car's warranty?

Older cars are usually out of the manufacturer's warranty. For younger cars, we discuss it with you before fitting. We never cut original wiring and you get the original radio back – the installation is reversible. If your car is leased, check the contract first.

Do I need to report the change to the road traffic office?

As a rule, no – replacing the radio doesn't require an MFK (the Swiss vehicle inspection) or a change to the registration document (Fahrzeugausweis). More answers in our FAQ.
