Map updates too expensive? Why your old sat nav falls short

Ten or fifteen years ago, factory navigation was an expensive extra. Today, it shows its age:

  • Outdated maps: new roundabouts, bypasses and changed motorway exits are missing – and the sat nav sends you on detours.
  • Expensive or no updates: a map update from the manufacturer often costs a few hundred francs. For many older systems, there are no updates at all any more.
  • No live traffic: at best, your old sat nav learns about jams from rough radio traffic reports.
  • Small screen, fiddly input: often just 5 to 7 inches, with addresses entered letter by letter using a rotary knob.

So today, retrofitting a navigation system means bringing your smartphone's navigation to a large screen in the dashboard – and never buying a map update again.

Navigation retrofit with CarPlay and Android Auto

Instead of buying map DVDs or SD cards, you use the navigation apps you know from your phone: Google Maps, Waze or – with an iPhone – Apple Maps. Via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, they appear large on the display, and the maps update continuously through the app at no extra cost.

Directions come through the car speakers, with the music lowered automatically. You enter destinations by voice and your phone stays in your pocket. That matters legally, too: in Switzerland, using a phone without hands-free while driving means a fixed fine of 100 francs.

The display measures 9 or 10 inches – up to 12.3 inches with Premium, depending on the car. In many cars with a large factory screen, an interface shows your phone's navigation right on the original display.

Sat nav with live traffic: what modern navigation can do

Where Google Maps, Waze and Apple Maps are ahead of an older factory sat nav:

Always up-to-date maps

New roads and roundabouts usually appear quickly – updates run automatically through the app, free of charge.

Live traffic and detours

Jams, roadworks and closures in real time; the route adapts and your arrival time stays realistic.

Destinations by voice

‘Navigate to the nearest petrol station’ – one sentence instead of hunting for letters with a knob.

Your places are already there

Saved addresses, contacts and frequent destinations from your phone are instantly available.

Search along the way

Find a petrol station, car park or restaurant along your route without losing your destination.

On holiday, too

The apps cover all of Europe – and with offline maps, you don't even need roaming (see below).

Offline maps for dead zones, tunnels and holidays abroad

With the Comfort and Premium packages, we also set up offline maps on the Android display. They're stored on the device itself and work independently of your phone and the mobile network:

  • Dead zones: in remote side valleys, on mountain passes or on long stretches through tunnels, the map and route stay available.
  • Holidays abroad: navigate without expensive roaming data – the maps for your holiday destinations are already on board.

Good to know: live traffic always needs a data connection; offline, you get the map and route guidance. You can also save map areas on your phone, for example in Google Maps or Apple Maps.

Sat nav for motorhomes and vans – with a vehicle profile

Standard phone navigation assumes you're driving an ordinary car. With a motorhome or van, though, height, width, length and weight matter – on narrow village roads, under low bridges or where weight limits apply.

On the Android display, you can install navigation apps with a vehicle profile that take your vehicle's dimensions and weight into account when planning a route. Road signs still apply, of course. More about installations in campervans and vans on our campervans & vans page.

With the original-look interface, the original screen – and, as a rule, the factory sat nav – remain usable; phone navigation is simply added.

What does a navigation retrofit cost?

Navigation via CarPlay and Android Auto is included in every package; from the Comfort package, we also set up offline maps. For comparison: a single factory map update often costs a three-figure sum – without live traffic and without CarPlay.

Navigation retrofit: frequently asked questions

Is a map update for my old sat nav still worth it?

It depends on the system – often not. For older units, manufacturer updates frequently cost several hundred francs or are no longer available, and the maps go out of date again. A retrofit from CHF 690 gives you permanently current maps, live traffic, CarPlay, Android Auto and hands-free calling. Details on our prices page.

Do I need mobile data for navigation?

For live traffic, yes – the navigation apps use your phone's data connection. With offline maps, the map and route guidance also work without a signal. From the Comfort package, we set these up on the display; on your phone, you can download map areas yourself.

Does navigation work in tunnels?

There's no GPS signal in a tunnel. Depending on the app, your position is estimated, and route guidance continues normally once you're out. With offline maps, the route stays loaded even if mobile reception drops as well.

Is it possible without replacing the radio?

In many cars with a large factory screen, such as BMW, Audi or Mercedes-Benz, an interface (from CHF 790) adds CarPlay and Android Auto to the original screen. With simpler radios, a new display replaces the old unit – you get it back and can have it refitted at any time.

Is there a sat nav with a motorhome or van profile?

Yes. On the Android display, you can install navigation apps with a vehicle profile for height, width, length and weight. More on our campervans & vans page.

Do I need an MFK inspection after the installation?

As a rule, no. Replacing the radio or sat nav isn't a modification that requires an MFK (the Swiss vehicle inspection) or an entry in the vehicle registration document (Fahrzeugausweis). More answers in our FAQ.
