Retrofit CarPlay & Android Auto in your Mini

A Mini is no ordinary car – and that goes for the cockpit too. On the second generation (R55 to R61, approx. 2006–2016), the screen, if there is one, sits in the large centre instrument, and there's usually no standard radio slot. A CarPlay retrofit for your Mini therefore needs a solution that matches its exact equipment and year.

Depending on the car, an interface brings CarPlay and Android Auto to the original screen (from CHF 790), or a new display takes over (from CHF 690). On early F56 models with navigation, we also check whether CarPlay can be activated in the factory system. Because Mini cockpits vary so much, we tell you honestly after our free check what makes sense – and what doesn't.

Factory radios and systems in Mini cars

Technically, the Mini is based on BMW electronics, but its cockpit is unique. The solution therefore depends heavily on generation and equipment:

R50 and R53 (approx. 2001–2006)

The first generation has a radio in the centre console below the centre instrument. Here we check individually which display can be integrated neatly.

R55 to R61 with Boost CD, Visual Boost or navigation

Without a screen (Boost CD), a vehicle-specific solution is needed, which we assess from photos. With Visual Boost or navigation, there's a screen in the centre instrument: depending on the model, an interface brings CarPlay and Android Auto to it, operated with the Mini controller or joystick, the steering-wheel buttons or by voice.

F55 and F56 (from 2014)

Early cars generally don't have CarPlay from the factory. With Visual Boost or navigation, an interface is possible; with Navigation XL running newer software (NBT EVO), we check whether CarPlay can be activated in the factory system.
